AFT Local 933 Leadership and Elections Overview

2021 is a significant year for our Local 933 Union. Between September and December of 2021, three different elections for important Union leadership positions will take place. This includes elections for the Executive Board, Building Stewards, and Chief Steward. Below is a brief explanation of the roles within our Union leadership, as well as how and when they are elected.

EXECUTIVE BOARD

  • The Executive Board governs our union.

  • The Executive Board is elected by Local 933 members. Elections are held every three years.

  • The Executive Board includes 25 positions:

    • President

    • Executive Vice President

    • Executive Secretary

    • Treasurer

    • Vice-President for High Schools

    • Vice-President for Middle Schools

    • Vice-President for Elementary Schools

    • Vice-President for Special Services

    • High School Representatives (3)

    • Middle School (6-8) Representatives (3)

    • Elementary (pre K - 5) Representatives (4)

    • Special Services Representative (2)

    • Trustees (5) - Trustees are non-voting members of the Executive Board

    • Delegates (15) - Delegates represent our Union within the Central Labor Council and attend National and State Conventions on behalf of Local 933. Although Delegates are not technically part of the Executive Board, the election of Delegates and Executive Board members are on the same ballot. Local 933 members can run for and be elected to be both a Delegate and an Executive Board member. 

  • The Executive Board meets monthly from September through June (on the first Tuesday of each month, when possible).

  • Nominations for the Executive Board, Trustees Council, and Delegates will take place at the October Stewards/general membership meeting. In 2021, this meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 19th.

  • Ballots will be mailed to all Local 933 member’s homes and sent back via USPS.

  • Ballots will be accepted for counting until 6:00PM on the day of the election, which is on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in December. In 2021, election day will be Tuesday, December 7th.

UNION STEWARDS

  • Each school building also has at least one elected Building Steward who supports Union members and serves as a liaison between the members at that building site and the Union leadership.

  • Building Stewards are elected every other year (in September of odd years) by those Local 933 members who work at that building site.

  • Building Stewards meet monthly from September through June (on the third Tuesday of each month, when possible).

  • The Building Stewards also elect a Chief Steward (in November of odd years). The Chief Steward sits on the Executive Board as a non-voting member.
